People imagine off-grid life is mostly about power and water. In practice, the thing that decides whether a remote place is liveable for anyone with a job, a business or a family is usually the signal. You can carry water and you can store sunshine in a battery, but you cannot easily do bank transfers, video calls or online shopping over a connection that drops every few minutes. The good news is that getting a rural British home online is genuinely one of the more solvable problems, as long as you go in with clear eyes about coverage and, crucially for off-grid, about power.

There are really only three realistic ways to do it: a mobile broadband router boosted with a proper antenna, low-earth-orbit satellite (in the UK that means Starlink), and where it exists, fixed wireless or community fibre. This guide walks through each, what it costs to buy and to run, how much of your precious battery it quietly eats, and how to work out which one your particular patch of Britain can actually support. First, check what you can actually get

Before you spend a penny on kit, and certainly before you buy a plot, find out what is realistically available. The single most useful tool is the free Ofcom coverage checker. You type in a postcode and it shows predicted mobile coverage by operator, split into indoor and outdoor, and 4G and 5G, alongside the broadband services that reach the property. It is the load-bearing first step, because everything that follows depends on the answer.

The reason this matters so much is that your best and cheapest option, a mobile router, only works if there is a signal to catch. If the checker and a site visit both say there is decent 4G or 5G, you are in the cheap, low-power camp. If they say nothing, you are almost certainly looking at Starlink, and you should budget power accordingly.

Option one: a boosted 4G or 5G router

For a great many rural homes, the sweet spot is a home 4G or 5G router with a mobile SIM in it. You buy a router designed to take a SIM card, drop in an unlimited-data SIM, and it broadcasts wifi around the house just like an ordinary broadband router. Where there is a reasonable signal, modern 4G comfortably handles streaming and video calls, and 5G can be very fast indeed.

The trick that turns a marginal signal into a usable one is an external antenna. Rather than relying on the little aerials inside the router, you fit a directional antenna outside, up high, aimed at the nearest mast, and run a cable down to the router. A MIMO antenna (one that uses multiple elements to send and receive several data streams at once) can lift both speed and reliability dramatically in a weak-signal spot. Pointing it accurately at the mast, and getting it as high and as clear of obstructions as you can, often makes more difference than any other single thing.

On cost, an unlimited-data SIM for a router is widely available and competitively priced, and the router and antenna are one-off purchases. It is normally the cheapest route online where the signal supports it. Just check that any SIM you choose genuinely allows use in a fixed router rather than only in a phone, as terms vary between providers.

If your signal is weak but present, a mobile repeater (also called a booster) can help. It picks up the outdoor signal, usually via an antenna near a window or on the roof, and rebroadcasts it inside. But this is one area where the law is specific, and a lot of what is sold online is illegal to use.

For a home broadband setup, note the difference between a repeater (which rebroadcasts a phone signal indoors for your handsets) and a plain external antenna wired into a SIM router (which feeds the router directly). The external antenna route is usually the more effective and the simpler to keep legal for a fixed home internet connection.

Where there is genuinely no mobile signal, satellite is the answer, and in the UK that overwhelmingly means Starlink. Unlike old-fashioned satellite broadband, which bounces off satellites more than 35,000 kilometres up and suffers high latency as a result, Starlink uses a large constellation of satellites in low orbit, only a few hundred kilometres up. That closeness is what gives it genuinely fast speeds and low latency, good enough for video calls and even gaming, almost anywhere in the UK with a clear view of the sky.

You install a dish (nicknamed "Dishy"), which needs an unobstructed view upwards, point it roughly and let it align itself, and plug in the router. Starlink's own UK residential plans have in the past started at around £40 a month for the entry tier, with faster and unlimited-priority tiers costing more, plus a one-off cost for the hardware kit. Prices and tiers change regularly, so always check Starlink's current pricing rather than trusting a figure in any guide, including this one. Advertised speeds reach up to 400 Mbps or more in good conditions, which for a remote plot can be transformational.

Option three: fixed wireless, community fibre and the rest

Do not overlook the ground-based options, even somewhere remote. Fixed wireless providers beam broadband from a mast or a high point to a receiver on your roof, and in the right terrain (line of sight to their transmitter) they can offer good speeds without a phone line. Small community and altnet fibre projects, some supported by the government's Project Gigabit programme, are steadily reaching places the big providers ignored, so it is always worth searching for a local wireless internet service provider or community fibre scheme covering your valley.

Traditional geostationary satellite broadband still exists too, and reaches anywhere, but its high latency (that long round trip to a distant satellite) makes video calls and gaming frustrating, so it is now very much a last resort behind Starlink. The Ofcom checker and a few local searches will quickly tell you whether any of these ground-based options actually reach your plot; often, for the truly off-grid, they will not, which is precisely why mobile and Starlink dominate.

Where you have no signal, Starlink is close to miraculous in what it delivers, but you must respect its appetite for watts and design your power system around it rather than bolting it on as an afterthought.
