Type "are scented candles" into a search box and it finishes the sentence for you: "toxic", "bad for you", "killing you". Every autumn brings a fresh round of alarming headlines. So it is worth saying the calm, honest version plainly, because it is more useful than the scare pieces: for most people, occasionally burning a candle in a room that gets some fresh air is a low-risk pleasure. The "scented candles are toxic" framing is largely overstated. But "largely overstated" is not the same as "nothing to know", and there are a few real, modest points that are genuinely worth understanding, especially if someone in your house has asthma.
This is a plain-English guide, not medical advice. Where health is concerned we have leaned on lung specialists and UK lung-health bodies rather than on either the candle industry or the doom merchants. Read the measured summary below, then the detail.
What is actually in a scented candle
Strip away the branding and a candle is three things: wax, a wick and, if it is scented, fragrance. Understanding each takes most of the mystery out of the health question.
The wax is the fuel. Most cheap candles use paraffin, which is a by-product of refining petroleum. Plant-based waxes, mainly soy and rapeseed here in the UK, and beeswax, are the alternatives. All of them burn by the same basic chemistry, and all of them produce some combustion by-products, but the type and amount can vary between waxes and, importantly, with quality.
The wick delivers fuel to the flame. This is where the single biggest historic worry lived, lead. Decades ago some wicks used a lead core, which released lead into the air as the candle burned. That is a genuine hazard, and it is also, thankfully, a solved problem in this country. According to the European candle manufacturers' association, European makers voluntarily phased out lead wicks back in the 1970s and 1980s, several countries then banned them (Denmark and Finland did so in 2001), and in 2018 the European Chemicals Agency added lead to its list of substances of very high concern. Today the great majority of wicks are simply cotton or paper, and where a stiffer core is used it is usually harmless zinc or tin. A modern, reputably made candle bought in the UK should have a lead-free wick as standard.
The fragrance is what makes a candle "scented", and it can be synthetic perfume or natural essential oils. Fragrance is the part most likely to bother a sensitive person, less because it is uniquely dangerous and more because fragranced products in general are a common trigger for people with asthma and allergies.
When you light the lot, combustion produces a little soot and fine particulate matter, plus small quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). That is the honest raw material of the health debate: not poison, but not literally nothing either.
What the evidence actually shows
Here is where the measured picture matters, because the science genuinely does not support the scariest headlines, and it does not give candles a completely clean bill of health either.
The reassuring part first. Burning a candle releases trace amounts of VOCs, including tiny quantities of things like toluene and benzene, and some fine particles. But "trace" and "tiny" are doing real work in that sentence. Emission-chamber studies and clinical reviewers generally find that in normal domestic use these levels are low. A Cleveland Clinic pulmonologist, reviewing the research, put it about as plainly as it can be put: she is not concerned for people who choose to burn candles in a well-ventilated space, and noted that we routinely do far higher-risk things, ordinary cooking, especially frying, puts more particulate matter into the air than a candle does. On cancer specifically, there is no good evidence that normal candle use causes it. A small number of studies have flagged a possible association with bladder cancer, and that is worth honest mention, but an association in a handful of studies is a long way from proof, and the everyday exposure is very low.
The cautionary part, kept in proportion. The same combustion that is negligible in an aired room behaves very differently when ventilation is poor. Researchers in Ireland studying real homes found that using scented candles with the windows closed and the wall vents blocked could push peak fine-particle concentrations well above World Health Organization guideline levels, and that in an unventilated room those levels take a while to settle back down. That is the genuine nugget inside the scare stories: it is not the candle so much as the sealed room. There is also a specific, well-supported point about incense, which tends to produce considerably more particulate matter than a candle and is best avoided in heavy amounts.
Paraffin, soy, rapeseed or beeswax? An honest comparison
This is the choice the marketing makes the most noise about, so it deserves a straight answer. Soy, rapeseed and beeswax are genuinely appealing, they are renewable, they suit a more natural home, and many people find they look to burn more cleanly, with less visible soot. Cheaper paraffin candles do appear to release somewhat more soot and combustion by-products, and a pulmonologist reviewing the evidence suggested, while stressing it is not proven, leaning away from cheap paraffin. So preferring a good plant-based or beeswax candle is a reasonable, low-cost way to tilt things in your favour.
But be honest about the size of the effect. In normal use, the health difference between waxes is smaller than the price premium and the packaging imply. How you burn a candle, the ventilation, the wick length, how long and how often, matters more than which wax you chose. Beeswax deserves a special mention as a lovely natural option: it burns slowly, smells gently of honey on its own, and is about as "homestead" as a candle gets. How to burn candles sensibly
None of this is complicated, and doing it well removes most of the (already modest) downsides.
Getting the most from a candle, with the least smoke

Trim the wick to about 5mm
Before each burn, snip the wick down to roughly 5mm (about a quarter of an inch). A long wick makes a bigger, smokier flame and more soot. This one habit does more for a clean burn than the choice of wax.

Pick a larger, aired room
Burn in a living room rather than a small sealed bathroom, and crack a window if you are burning for a while. Ventilation is the single biggest lever on indoor particle levels.

Keep it out of draughts
A flickering flame in a draught burns unevenly and smokes more. Set the candle somewhere still, away from open doorways and fans.

Do not burn for hours in a sealed room
The problem is rarely a short evening candle; it is heavy, prolonged use with no fresh air. Give the room a change of air rather than letting fumes build up.

Choose a lead-free, plain wick
Standard in the UK and EU already, but if you are ever unsure, pick candles with a cotton, paper or wooden wick.

Go easy on heavy scent if asthma is in the house
Lightly scented, unscented, or battery-operated candles are gentler. Stop if anyone develops symptoms.

Snuff, do not blow
Most of a candle's smoke is released when the flame goes out. Snuffing it (ideally near an open window) makes far less smoke than blowing.

Mind the fire risk first
Never leave a lit candle unattended, near curtains or soft furnishings, or within reach of children or pets. Fire is the real everyday hazard, not the fumes.

So, are scented candles bad for you?
For the great majority of people, used sensibly, no, not to any meaningful degree, and the blanket "toxic" headlines overstate a small, manageable thing. Burn a good candle in an aired room, trim the wick, do not smoke yourself out in a sealed bathroom, and enjoy it. The honest caveats are narrow and worth respecting: if you or your household have asthma or a lung condition, be more careful with scent and ventilation and listen to your symptoms; avoid heavy incense use; and remember that the biggest real risk from any candle is fire, not fumes. That is the whole of it, and it is a good deal calmer than the internet would have you believe.
