You spot it first on the kettle: a chalky grey-white crust creeping up the element and clouding the water. Then the taps go dull, the shower screen turns misty, the loo grows a stubborn ring below the waterline, and the shower head starts spraying sideways. That is limescale, and if you live anywhere across the South and East of England you are on intimate terms with it. The reassuring part is that it is harmless to drink, cheap to remove and easy to keep on top of once you understand what it is.
This guide covers what limescale actually is, why so much of the UK gets it, the two natural acids that shift it, a step-by-step for the jobs that matter, and the honest options for stopping it coming back. No fear, no gimmicks, no expensive kit you do not need.
What limescale actually is
Limescale is mostly calcium carbonate, with some magnesium carbonate, and it comes straight out of your tap water. As rain soaks through chalk and limestone underground, it dissolves calcium and magnesium and carries them into the supply. Water carrying a lot of these minerals is what we call "hard water". While it stays cold and flowing, the minerals stay dissolved and invisible. But heat the water, or let it sit and evaporate, and the minerals drop out of solution and cement themselves onto whatever is nearest: the kettle element, the inside of the boiler, the tap spout, the shower nozzles, the tiles. That hard, off-white deposit is limescale.
This is why scale shows up exactly where water gets hot or dries out: kettles, immersion heaters and boilers, irons, coffee machines, dishwashers and washing machines, and around taps, plugholes, shower heads, screens and toilet bowls. It is doing no more than the mineral it always was, just in solid form and in the wrong place.
Why so much of the UK has hard water
Water hardness follows geology. Where the ground is chalk and limestone, as across much of southern and eastern England, the water picks up plenty of calcium and magnesium and comes out hard or very hard. Where the rock is granite or other hard, insoluble stone, as in much of Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and the North West, the water stays soft and scale is barely an issue. London, the Home Counties, East Anglia and the South East sit firmly in the hard-water band; a homesteader in the Highlands may never see a fleck of scale.
You do not have to guess. Your water company publishes the hardness for your supply, usually searchable by postcode on their website, given in milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre (mg/l) or sometimes in other units. As a rough guide, water below about 100 mg/l is generally considered soft to slightly hard, roughly 100 to 200 mg/l moderately hard, and 200 mg/l and above hard (bands vary slightly between sources). Knowing your number tells you how hard you will have to work, and whether something like a softener is worth considering.
Is limescale bad for you? No.
Because limescale looks grim, people assume it must be unhealthy. It is not. The minerals that form it, calcium and magnesium, are the same ones in a glass of mineral water and in plenty of foods. The Drinking Water Inspectorate points out that UK drinking water rules do not set any limit for hardness, calcium or magnesium, because there is no health reason to. Reviews of the evidence generally find hard water to be neutral or even mildly beneficial, with the dissolved minerals making a small contribution to daily calcium and magnesium intake. So hard water is tough on your kettle and your boiler, not on your body. Limescale is a cleaning job, nothing more. What it does cost you is efficiency and appliances: a coating of scale on a heating element acts as insulation, so the element has to work harder and use more energy to heat the water, and thick scale shortens the life of kettles, boilers and washing machines. That is the real reason to keep on top of it.
The two natural limescale removers
Everything below relies on one of two mild, natural acids. They do the same chemistry; the difference is smell, cost and where each one shines.

The golden rule for both is contact time, not elbow grease. Acid needs to sit on the scale and react. Scrubbing a dry deposit gets you nowhere and risks scratching chrome; soaking it soft first means the scale wipes away with barely any effort. How to descale taps, shower heads and the toilet
Descaling the main limescale hotspots

Taps and spouts
Soak a cloth or a few sheets of kitchen roll in neat white vinegar, wrap it snugly round the limescaled part of the tap and the base of the spout, and hold it in place with an elastic band or a freezer-bag tied over the end of the spout. Leave it for an hour, longer for a heavy crust. Remove, work the softened scale off with an old toothbrush, rinse and buff dry. For blocked aerators (the mesh at the tip of the spout), unscrew and soak the part separately.

Shower head
If it unscrews, soak it in a bowl of white vinegar or a citric acid solution for an hour or two, up to overnight for stubborn scale. If it is fixed, part-fill a strong freezer bag with vinegar, raise it so the nozzles are submerged, and tie or band it over the head overnight. Then brush the nozzles clean with an old toothbrush and run the shower hot for a minute to flush the holes.

Shower screen and tiles
Spray or wipe on white vinegar (neat, or half-and-half with water), leave for 10 to 15 minutes so it can bite into the filmy scale, then wipe with a microfibre cloth or a soft sponge and rinse. Repeat on any stubborn patches rather than scrubbing hard. Squeegee dry to keep it clear.

Toilet bowl
For the scale ring below the waterline, first lower the water level: turn off the supply and flush, or bail a little out, so the acid sits directly on the scale. Pour in around 500ml of white vinegar (or a strong citric acid solution), coat the ring, and leave for a few hours or overnight. Scrub with the toilet brush, then flush. Repeat for heavy build-up rather than resorting to harsher chemicals.

Kettle and appliances
For the kettle, citric acid is the neat choice: dissolve a tablespoon or two in water, fill, bring to the boil, leave to stand until the scale lifts, then rinse thoroughly and boil once more with fresh water before use. What not to put acid on
Acid is only safe where the surface can take it. Get this wrong and you can cause damage that will not polish out, so read this before you reach for the vinegar.
If a tap or fitting is plated rather than solid chrome, or you simply do not know, favour a short soak with a diluted acid over a long one, check partway through, and stop as soon as the scale lifts.
Preventing limescale coming back
You cannot make hard water soft with a cloth, but you can slow scale right down, and you have three honest routes depending on how hard your water is and how much you want to spend.
There is no single right answer, and no need to be talked into the most expensive option. A softener genuinely earns its keep in a very hard-water area with a houseful of appliances to protect, because scale-free water extends the life of the boiler, kettle and washing machine and keeps them running efficiently. In a moderately hard area, a bottle of vinegar or a tub of citric acid and the habit of wiping surfaces dry will keep you on top of it for a few pounds a year. Work out your hardness first, then choose.
A sensible routine
Living well with hard water is mostly about small, regular habits rather than occasional heroics. Keep white vinegar and a tub of citric acid in the cupboard. Wipe taps and the shower screen dry when you think of it. Descale the kettle and coffee machine on a set rhythm, run citric acid through the dishwasher and washing machine now and again, and give the taps, shower head and loo a soak whenever scale starts to show rather than waiting for a thick crust. Do that, and limescale stays a minor five-minute job instead of a weekend battle.
