Making your own home a bit less reliant on harsh chemicals is a good instinct, and a lot of what we write in this cluster is about doing exactly that. But there is one piece of kitchen chemistry that everyone should know cold, whether they clean with vinegar and bicarbonate of soda or with the strongest bottle in the cupboard: some cleaning products must never be mixed. Combined, a handful of everyday cleaners can release genuinely toxic gases, and it happens most often not in a lab but in an ordinary kitchen sink or bathroom, by accident, when someone is trying to be thorough.
This is not a scare piece. Used one at a time and as directed, these products are fine. The danger comes from combining them, and the single most useful habit you can build is to use one product at a time and rinse between them. Below are the combinations that matter, the correct chemistry for each, how to recognise a problem, and what to do if it happens.
The combinations that are genuinely dangerous

Bleach and vinegar, or any acid
This is the one to remember above all others, because both ingredients are so common and vinegar has such a wholesome, harmless reputation. Household bleach is sodium hypochlorite. When it meets an acid, it releases chlorine gas. Vinegar is acetic acid, but the same reaction happens with citric acid, with limescale removers and descalers, and with many acidic toilet, bathroom and washroom cleaners. Washington State's health department puts it plainly: when chlorine bleach is mixed with an acid, chlorine gas is given off.
Chlorine gas irritates the moist surfaces it touches first, so a low-level exposure typically causes burning or watering eyes, a runny nose, a sore throat and coughing. Larger exposures can cause chest pain, more serious breathing difficulty and, at high concentrations, dangerous fluid build-up in the lungs. The practical takeaway is simple and firm: never pour vinegar or a descaler onto bleach, never leave bleach in a toilet and then add an acidic toilet cleaner, and never combine them in a bowl or spray bottle "to boost" either one.
Bleach and ammonia
Ammonia is less obvious than vinegar because it hides in products you might not think of as cleaners in the chemistry sense. It is in some glass and window cleaners, in certain multi-surface sprays, and it occurs naturally in urine, which is worth remembering when cleaning toilets, litter trays or nappy bins. Mix bleach and ammonia and you get chloramine gases, which cause shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing and watering eyes. As with acids, the safe approach is to keep bleach well away from any ammonia-based product and never use them on the same surface without a thorough water rinse in between.
Bleach and rubbing alcohol
Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) turns up in some surface wipes, sanitising sprays and glass cleaners. Combined with bleach it can form chloroform along with other chlorinated compounds. These fumes are toxic and irritating, and there is simply no good reason to create them at home. If you use an alcohol-based wipe or spray on a surface, do not then hit the same surface with bleach.
Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar
Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are both sold as gentler, more natural cleaning options, which is exactly why people are tempted to combine them. Mixed together in one container they form peracetic acid (also called peroxyacetic acid), which is corrosive and can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs, particularly if the mixture is left to build up in a closed bottle. This is a milder hazard than chlorine gas, but it is still a needless one. You can use one and then the other on a surface as separate steps, rinsing in between, but never store them premixed in a single spray bottle.
Two drain unblockers, or a drain cleaner then vinegar
Chemical drain unblockers are among the harshest products in the house, and they are dangerous to combine. Some are strongly alkaline (caustic soda based) and others strongly acidic, and mixing two different ones, or adding a second on top of one that is still sitting in a blocked pipe, can set off a violent reaction that releases a lot of heat very fast. That can make the mixture boil and spit caustic liquid back up out of the plughole, give off fumes, and even damage the pipework. If a product contains bleach, you can get chlorine gas on top. The bicarbonate-of-soda-and-vinegar fizz that is fine for a gentle, natural drain freshen-up is emphatically not something to pour on top of a commercial chemical unblocker. Use one drain product exactly as directed, give it time, and if that fails, call a plumber rather than layering on a second chemical.
How to recognise a problem
The first sign is usually smell: a sharp, swimming-pool or bleachy odour that appears the moment two products meet. Physical symptoms follow quickly and, according to the NHS, poisoning from breathing something harmful can include difficulty breathing, feeling sick, confusion and, in serious cases, loss of consciousness. For the toxic gases above, the typical early signs are:
- Stinging, burning or watering eyes
- A runny nose and a sore, scratchy throat
- Coughing
- Tightness in the chest or difficulty breathing
- Feeling light-headed, sick or dizzy
Anyone with asthma or another lung condition may react more strongly and sooner, so treat their symptoms with extra caution.
What to do if you have mixed products by accident
If you have accidentally mixed cleaning products

Get everyone out
Move yourself, children and pets out of the room and into fresh air straight away. Do not stay to finish the job or to tidy up the mixture.

Ventilate
Open windows and doors to air the room out. Do this from a safe distance if you can, and close the internal door on the room while it clears.

Leave the mixture alone
Do not try to mop up, pour away, dilute or neutralise the mixture while fumes are still coming off it. Give the room time to clear first.

Rinse any splashes
If product has splashed onto skin, remove any soiled clothing and rinse the area with lukewarm water for at least 10 to 15 minutes. For eyes, remove contact lenses and rinse with lukewarm water for 10 to 15 minutes, then seek medical advice.

Get medical advice
Call NHS 111 if you are unsure how serious it is, or if mild symptoms such as coughing or sore eyes are not settling with fresh air. Have the product labels to hand so you can say what was mixed.

Call 999 or go to A&E if there is severe difficulty breathing, chest tightness that does not ease, wheezing, or if anyone collapses or loses consciousness.
Safe cleaning habits that prevent all of this
Almost every home gassing incident comes down to a moment of trying to be thorough: bleaching a toilet, then adding a limescale cleaner; wiping a surface with one spray, then reaching for bleach. A few steady habits remove the risk entirely.
- Use one product at a time. Never combine cleaners, and be especially careful with anything containing bleach.
- Rinse between products. If a job genuinely needs two different cleaners, do them as separate steps and rinse the surface thoroughly with plain water in between.
- Ventilate. Open a window or door when using strong products, particularly in a small bathroom or toilet.
- Read the label. Check what is actually in a product before use, and follow its dilution and contact-time instructions. Many labels carry a "do not mix" warning for a reason.
- Keep products in their original bottles. Never decant a cleaner into an unlabelled bottle or an old drink bottle, which is both a poisoning risk for children and a recipe for mixing the wrong things.
- Store products separately. Keep bleach apart from acids, descalers and ammonia-based cleaners, and keep everything up high and out of reach of children and pets.
