If you live anywhere in central, eastern or southern England you already know limescale: the chalky white crust on the kettle element, the cloudy film on glasses, the crunchy shower head. Citric acid is the quiet hero for all of it. It is inexpensive, it stores as a dry powder, and it dissolves scale fast. This guide covers what it actually is, exactly how much to use for each job, how it compares with white vinegar, and the handful of surfaces where you must not use it.

What is citric acid?

Citric acid is a mild, weak acid that occurs naturally in citrus fruit: it is a big part of what makes a lemon taste sharp. For cleaning it is sold as a fine white crystalline powder in tubs of roughly 250g to 1kg, and you will find it in supermarkets (often near the home baking or with the cleaning products), hardware shops, health-food shops and online. It is cheap, a little goes a long way, and unlike a bottle of vinegar it takes up almost no cupboard space.

Much of what is sold is food-grade, which is why the same powder turns up in home-brewing, bath bombs and elderflower cordial. If you want one tub for both cleaning and the kitchen, buy a food-grade one. Note that some brands sell a cleaning-grade version that is not packed on a food-safe line, so check the label if you intend to eat or drink anything made with it.

Why it is brilliant on limescale

Limescale is calcium carbonate: an alkaline mineral deposit left behind when hard water is heated or evaporates. The fix is simple school chemistry. An acid reacts with the alkaline scale, neutralises it and breaks it down into things that rinse away, leaving the surface clean. Citric acid does this job particularly well for two reasons.

First, it is a comparatively strong descaling acid: weight for weight it shifts scale more aggressively than household white vinegar, so stubborn kettle crust and furred-up shower heads give up faster. Second, and this is the one people fall in love with, it is odourless. There is no sharp vinegary smell to boil off afterwards, which is exactly why it beats vinegar for anything that then touches food or drink: kettles, coffee machines and dishwashers. You descale, rinse and you are done.

Hard water is the norm across much of England, so if your appliances scale up quickly you are not doing anything wrong; you just have mineral-rich water. Descaling every few weeks keeps kettles and machines efficient, because a scaled-up heating element uses more energy and wears out sooner.

What you can clean with it

Here is the practical part. For most jobs the method is the same: make a warm citric acid solution, let it sit on the scale, then rinse. Below are the specifics.

How to use citric acid, job by job

    Descale a kettle

    Add 1 to 2 tablespoons (about 20 to 30g) to enough water to cover the element. Boil, then leave to soak for 20 minutes up to an hour. You will often see it fizz as the scale dissolves.     Descale a coffee machine

    Dissolve 1 to 2 tablespoons in warm water first, pour into the reservoir, and run the machine's descale cycle (or simply run it through with no coffee). Follow with two or three cycles of clean fresh water to flush every trace out before you make a drink. Check your machine's manual, as some brands specify their own descaler.

    Descale a dishwasher

    Stand a bowl of strong citric acid solution (a couple of heaped tablespoons in warm water) on the top and bottom racks of an empty machine, or add the powder to the detergent compartment, and run a long, hot cycle. This clears limescale and freshens the inside. Do this every month or two in a hard-water area.

    Descale a washing machine (occasional)

    Add citric acid to the drum of an empty machine and run a long, hot wash to remove limescale from the element. Treat this as an occasional job, not an every-wash habit, and check your manual first (see the safety note below).

    Taps, shower head and tiles

    Make a solution of about 1 tablespoon per 500ml of warm water. Unscrew the shower head or tap aerator and soak it for 30 minutes to a few hours, or wrap a soaked cloth around taps you cannot remove. Rinse and buff dry.

    For a limescale line or stained bowl, sprinkle a few tablespoons of citric acid into the bowl, ideally with hot (not boiling) water, leave for an hour or overnight, then scrub with the brush and flush. The effect is quick and visible on scale.

    Dissolve about 2 tablespoons of citric acid in 500ml of warm water, let it cool and decant into a labelled spray bottle. Use on glass shower screens, chrome and stainless taps and around the sink. Shake before use, and rinse food-prep surfaces afterwards.

How much to use: a rough guide

You do not need to be precise. For everyday descaling, a working solution of about 1 to 2 tablespoons (roughly 15 to 30g) per 500ml to 1 litre of warm water handles most surfaces. Warm water helps the crystals dissolve and speeds up the reaction, so use warm rather than cold where you can. For heavy, long-neglected scale, make it stronger and leave it on longer rather than scrubbing harder: give it time and the acid does the work. For a kettle you can skip the measuring entirely and just tip a tablespoon or two straight in.

Safety: mild, but still an acid

Citric acid is far gentler than a strong chemical descaler, and it is food-grade, but "mild acid" is not the same as "harmless". A few firm rules keep you and your surfaces safe.

Beyond that, treat it with ordinary respect. Avoid getting the powder or solution in your eyes, and do not leave it on your skin for long: rinse with water if you do. Keep the tub labelled and out of reach of children and pets, and wear gloves for stronger solutions if your skin is sensitive.

Watch your surfaces too. Do not use citric acid on natural stone such as marble, granite, limestone or travertine: acid reacts with the calcium in the stone and etches a dull, permanent mark almost on contact. The same caution applies to some coated, plated, painted or anodised finishes and delicate metals, where prolonged acid contact can dull or damage the surface. If you are unsure, test a hidden patch first, keep contact time short and rinse thoroughly. On appliances, be led by the manufacturer: some, including certain washing-machine makers, advise against acid descalers because repeated use can wear rubber seals, so use it occasionally and check your manual.

Finally, two things it is not. Citric acid is not a disinfectant: it removes scale and cleans, but if you need to kill germs, use a proper disinfectant and follow its label. And always rinse anything that touches food or drink, such as kettles, coffee machines and dishwashers, with fresh water after descaling.
