It is in the bag your morning brew steeps in. It is in the chewing gum in your pocket. It is woven through the jumper you are wearing, shedding a little more with every wash. And as larger plastics slowly break down, they turn into the fragments and fibres we now call microplastics, which have turned up in water, food, air, and even in human blood.

What microplastics actually are

Secondary microplastics form when larger plastic items break down over time under sunlight, heat and abrasion, so a discarded bottle or a lost fishing net gradually crumbles into countless tiny fragments.
Because plastic is so durable and so widely used, these particles are now genuinely widespread. They have been measured in tap and bottled water, in seafood and other foods, in the air indoors and out, and in samples of human blood and tissue. That is a striking fact, and it is worth stating plainly: we do ingest and inhale microplastics, and they can be found in the body. What that means for our health is a separate question, and it is the one people most often get wrong.

Tea bags
This one catches people out, because a tea bag looks like paper. Many are not entirely. A lot of standard bags use a small amount of plastic, commonly polypropylene or PET, to seal the bag shut, and some pyramid-style bags are made largely of a plastic mesh such as nylon or PET. A peer-reviewed review of plastics in tea notes that bags can be made of plant fibre, biodegradable materials, or petroleum-based plastics, and that laboratory studies steeping plastic bags in water at around 95 degrees Celsius found large numbers of micro and nano-sized particles released into a single cup. Those are lab figures on empty bags rather than a measured health dose, so treat the numbers with caution, but the material point stands: a plastic bag in boiling water is not nothing. Loose-leaf tea with a simple metal or bamboo strainer sidesteps it entirely, and where you prefer bags, look for a clear "plastic-free" or "fully compostable" claim rather than the vaguer "biodegradable".
Chewing gum
Ordinary chewing gum is, quietly, a plastic product. The chewy "gum base" that gives gum its texture is usually a synthetic rubber, and it is rarely spelled out on the packet beyond the words "gum base". Gum made the old way used chicle, a natural tree sap, and a handful of makers have gone back to plant-based bases. If that matters to you, look for a natural gum base on the label. Whatever the gum, it belongs in the bin, never spat onto a pavement, because it does not break down.
Glitter, wet wipes and cosmetics
Glitter is almost the definition of a microplastic: it is usually made of tiny pieces of PET film, small enough to slip straight through drains and into waterways. Biodegradable or mineral alternatives exist if you need sparkle. Wet wipes are another surprise, since many contain plastic fibres running through them to make them strong and stretchy, which is exactly why they cause such trouble in sewers and on beaches. The big environmental sources: laundry, tyres and dust
If your concern is how much microplastic ends up in rivers and seas rather than in your teacup, the picture shifts. An assessment by the IUCN looked at primary microplastics, the ones released as small particles rather than from litter breaking down, and found that close to two-thirds of them came from just two sources: the washing of synthetic textiles and the abrasion of car tyres on the road. Cosmetic microbeads, by contrast, were estimated at only around 2 per cent, which is why the microbead ban, though welcome, was never going to solve the problem on its own.
That reframes where a household can make the most difference. Every time you wash a polyester fleece or an acrylic jumper, it sheds fibres that flow out with the water. This is the big lever. Wash polyester, acrylic and nylon less often, on cooler and shorter cycles, and with fuller loads. A microfibre-catching wash bag or an in-line washing-machine filter traps a good share of the fibres that would otherwise flow out.
