How to choose off-grid & survival kit
- Size power stations by need
- Add up the watt-hours you actually need overnight before buying capacity. A 1,000Wh unit runs a fridge and phones through a cut; whole-home backup is a different, bigger conversation.
- Solar realism in the UK
- British light means panels charge slower than the marketing suggests, so oversize the panel relative to the battery, and treat solar as a top-up, not a guarantee.
- Heat: stove and flue together
- A wood burner is only as good as its flue and its fuel. Buy seasoned or kiln-dried logs (under 20% moisture) and a moisture meter to prove it.
- Water you can trust
- A gravity or bottle filter rated for bacteria and protozoa covers most UK needs; check the rated litres and replace cartridges on schedule.
