How to choose grow kit
- Buy tools once
- Stainless or carbon-steel hand tools with a proper tang last decades; cheap pressed-metal ones bend in clay soil. A good trowel, fork and secateurs are worth more than a big cheap set.
- Match cover to your climate
- In most of the UK a cold frame, cloches or a polytunnel add weeks at both ends of the season. Pick horticultural fleece by weight (30gsm for frost, lighter for pests).
- Compost is the real investment
- A hot bin or a pair of Dalek-style bins pays back every year in free soil improver. Size it to your household's peelings and your bed count, not the biggest one on offer.
- Peat-free, always
- Peat-free composts have improved hugely; look for wood-fibre or coir blends and feed a little more often, as they hold nutrients differently to old peat mixes.
Prices move, so we show an indicative figure and always send you to the merchant to check the live price.
