Copper has a strange reputation in the garden. Half the internet swears by copper tape for slugs, the other half points to a Royal Horticultural Society trial and calls the whole thing a waste of money. Bronze tools get talked about like sacred objects in some circles and dismissed as expensive vanity in others. The truth, once you actually read the evidence, is more interesting than either camp lets on. Copper earns its place in several corners of the garden, as long as you know how to use it and where the honest limits are. Here's the fair, evidence-led picture.
Do copper slug barriers actually work?
Yes, when you use them properly, and this is where most of the "copper doesn't work" verdicts get it wrong. The strongest evidence is a peer-reviewed study by Schuder, Port and Bennison, published in the journal Crop Protection, which tested a range of slug and snail barriers in controlled conditions. Copper foil came out well: it significantly reduced leaf damage, and as a barrier against snails it was around 80% effective, beaten only by an industrial chemical barrier and better than most other options tested. A later study in the same journal found copper foil measurably delayed slugs trying to cross it. So the deterrent effect is real, and it's physical: research has shown copper acts on the slug through the sole of its foot, so a slug meeting a proper copper barrier gets an unpleasant reaction and turns back.
So why did the RHS trial find nothing? In 2018, RHS scientists grew 108 lettuces in open beds and ringed them with thin copper tape, and it made no meaningful difference to the damage. The reason isn't that copper fails. It's that thin tape around plants on open ground is the weakest possible way to use it. Slugs bridge across a single overhanging leaf, or simply travel round the ends, and a narrow strip gives them plenty of easy crossings. The RHS trial is a fair warning about cheap tape in open beds. It isn't evidence against a proper barrier. Even the RHS notes that some studies have shown copper barriers repel slugs.
The trick is to give copper the conditions it needs.
How to make a copper slug barrier actually work

Use genuine copper, and plenty of it
Real copper or a high-copper alloy, not a thin copper-coloured coating. A barrier around 5 cm (2 inches) wide, or a double band of tape, works far better than one narrow strip.

Put it where a slug can't go round
Copper shines as a complete ring the slug cannot flank: around a pot, along a raised-bed rim, or on the lip of a cold frame. It struggles on open ground where slugs just detour.

Leave no bridges
Keep leaves, stems, weeds and neighbouring pots from touching both sides of the barrier. A single leaf laid across it is a free bridge, and the whole thing fails.

Keep it reasonably clean
Fresh copper works straight away. Heavy grime or a thick tarnish can reduce reliable contact over time, so wipe it down now and then if it gets filthy.

Pair it with the basics
A barrier is one layer. Combine it with evening slug patrols, removing daytime hiding spots, and encouraging natural predators like frogs, hedgehogs and ground beetles for the best results.

Are copper and bronze garden tools worth it?
The tools sold as "copper" are usually bronze, a copper-tin alloy, and for the practical gardener the case is straightforward. Bronze tools don't rust, so they need almost no maintenance. They hold a keen edge, re-sharpen without shedding metal, and are lighter in the hand than steel. They slice cleanly through soil, and they genuinely last for decades, the sort of tool you hand down rather than replace. If you garden a lot and hate a rusty, blunt trowel, that alone can justify the outlay.
There's a second, more romantic case too, and it's worth reporting fairly. Biodynamic growers hold that copper tools don't disturb the soil the way iron does, and that the faint traces of copper they leave behind do the soil good. The idea traces back to the Austrian naturalist Viktor Schauberger, and it's taken seriously in biodynamic and no-dig circles, championed by makers like PKS Bronze and their UK importer. It is a sincerely-held belief rather than something mainstream science has confirmed, and some of the bigger claims made for it aren't independently verified. Our honest steer: buy bronze tools for the rust-free, sharp, lovely-to-use, lasts-a-lifetime reasons, which are real, and enjoy the soil philosophy as a bonus you needn't rely on. They are a treat, not a necessity, and the price reflects it.
Copper as a fungicide: the honest legal picture
Copper is a genuine, long-serving fungicide. Bordeaux mixture, a blend of copper sulphate and lime discovered in French vineyards in the 1880s, is one of the oldest working treatments for problems like potato and tomato blight, peach leaf curl and bacterial cankers, and copper is still permitted as a contact fungicide in organic farming.
For UK home gardeners, though, it's off the table, and this is the one line to be clear about. The amateur copper products were withdrawn: Bordeaux mixture could no longer be sold to gardeners after 30 November 2014, with a use-up deadline of 30 November 2015, and there is currently no copper fungicide approved for amateur use in Great Britain. The copper fungicides that remain, such as Cuprokylt, are professional-only. So if you've read an old book or an American website recommending a copper spray for peach leaf curl or blight, it no longer applies here.
The practical answer for the classic case, peach leaf curl, is now cultural rather than chemical: keep winter and early-spring rain off the tree with a simple lean-to or polythene shelter from late autumn until spring, because the spores spread in wet weather. And always check the current approvals before buying any pesticide, since the rules genuinely do change.
Where else copper earns its keep
Copper turns up usefully in a few other corners of the garden and smallholding.
- Rodent-proof mesh. Copper wool and mesh stuffed into gaps, airbricks and pipe entries is a genuinely good mouse and rat deterrent. They can't gnaw through it easily, and unlike steel wool it doesn't rust away in a damp gap.
- Plant labels and markers. Copper labels don't rust, weather to a stable patina and stay legible outdoors for years. A small, honest, buy-it-once pleasure.
- Plant supports and obelisks. Copper and copper-finished supports last well outdoors and age to an attractive verdigris. Some are sold as also deterring slugs climbing the plant; treat that as plausible rather than proven, since slugs often reach a plant from the soil anyway. Buy them for the looks and longevity.
- Pond algae, with real caution. Copper genuinely kills algae, which is why copper-based algaecides exist, but the gap between clearing algae and harming fish, snails and beneficial pond life is narrow. For a garden wildlife pond it's the wrong tool. Reach for planting balance, barley straw and shade instead.
Copper, then, is neither the miracle nor the myth it's sometimes painted as. Used with a bit of knowledge, it's a genuinely useful metal to have around the garden.
